R.E.A.D. (Read Education Assistance Dogs) was started in 1999 in Salt Lake City by the Intermountain Therapy Animal group. It now has 1300 registered teams in 49 states, Canada and England. The R.E.A.D. Dogs help children develop their love for reading while reading to a nonjudgmental therapy animal. They are also just fun to be around! R.E.A.D. teams go to 8 schools serving around 30 students on a weekly basis during the school year. There is at least one R.E.A.D. team in every school district in Shawnee County. The R.E.A.D. teams are members of the Prairieland Visiting Animals Association and are registered with the Delta Society’s Pet Partners Program (www.deltasociety.org ).
