Welcome to the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library
Each year, Outreach Storyteller Judy Rohr helps our community celebrate El día de los niños/El día de los libros, Children's Day/Book Day on April 30th. This year, she was rewarded and acknowledged for her efforts with a $1000 Mora Award.
The Estela and Raúl Mora Award was established in 2000 by author Pat Mora and her family to honor their parents and to motivate libraries to celebrate "Día," El día de los niños/El día de los libros, Children's Day/Book Day on April 30th. Founded by Pat in 1996, this family literacy initiative that advocates daily linking all children with books is now housed at The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association. Annual culminating celebrations of "bookjoy" are held in libraries across the country in April.
Members of REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-speaking, Pat's partner throughout Día's history, serve as judges for the Award which consists of a check for $1,000 and a plaque donated by the Mora grandchildren.
