Welcome to the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library
Small lesson learned
As an intern, there is so much to prove and still so much to learn. It’s all about balance. When I started my first project of putting together the handout for the first session of Candidate School, I went in with shaky confidence. I knew I could put something together that would probably work, but I was worried that nobody would like it.
Luckily for me, it was well-received, but only after some changes.
Since I am only at TSCPL twice a week, it leaves a gap between when I am working on something and when it may actually be needed. Thankfully, it was an advantage this time. My first screw-up was noticed and fixed in my five days away. The layout on my screen and how the printed version looked were off, and not just a little bit off. The pagination was completely wrong.
When I came into work the next Tuesday and saw a mutilated booklet on my desk, I knew exactly what I forget to check, without even looking at any of the notes. Now making sure that the pages are laid out to how they’ll be assembled, and not how they look on the screen, is the first thing I’ll remember check.
Onto making more mistakes and more learning.
