Welcome to the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library
I was encouraged to introduce myself, so this is one way I am doing that. I’m still a student at Washburn University, but I’ll officially graduate in May. One of my favorite and time-consuming hobbies is photography, so I may sneak a picture or two into these blogs (I never claimed to be good at it). I also like reading (of course), writing, and spoiling my niece and nephews.
When I found the application for the TSCPL public relations intern position, I was beyond excited. I knew that this was the type of position I had been hoping to find; one that allows me to be creative and learn from people who are genuinely excited to provide a meaningful service to their community and its people. I wasn’t sure how many others would apply for the internship or how competitive their experience would be with mine, but I wasn’t going to let it turn into a lost opportunity.
I have been here for three weeks now, and it is as great as I thought it would be. Everyone is very welcoming and always offers help if I need it. I have worked on Candidate School handouts, helped Lisa Coble-Krings with her video blog, and been to several meetings to learn the inner workings of different areas of the library.
One of the biggest things I have learned so far, and probably should have realized before now, is that in class, I learned all the fundamentals of the media and communications world, but experience is what will make me good. College seems very slow-paced comparatively, but the constant on-the-go environment keeps me interested in what is going on. I am sure that my brain will swell with information over the next few months, and I am very much looking forward to it.
