That was disgusting! Did you see the glob that Jason and Kelly brought into The Edge yesterday (Thursday)? It was representative of a pound of human fat. Yuck! The shocker, for every 3500 calories over what a person’s body burns the body retains that glob of fat.
The second session of No Couch Potatoes Needed drew a handful of teens. The group discussed body fat , how to read nutrition labels, and theimportance of fiber and protein in the daily in-take. Before ending the session, they discussed subject matter that interests the group. The next session, March 4 at 3:30-4:30, the topic will be eating disorders.
Exciting activities were happening in the auditorium on Thursday, February 11 at 3:30 pm. The after school teens were making and decorating valentine cookies. The dough was already prepared, of course, but the teens got to roll out their blob of dough and make enormous or smaller heart shaped cookies.
Lots of different kinds of sprinkles were added in varying colors. It was amazing the different cookie variations that were placed on the cookie sheets. The Millennium Cafe generously offered to bake the cookies so yummy sugar cookie smells drifted down the auditorium hallway. That seemed to encourage other people to drift into the program and see what all the excitement was about. Those who didn't sprinkle their cookies before baking could frost the baked cookies. Strawberry and vanilla frosting were the choices and then more sprinkles were added.
Those cookies that weren't eaten on the spot were wrapped in foil, tied with ribbon and a personal heart shaped card was attached. Sugarbakers' Cookie-Cutter Cookbook would inspire cookie bakers for any holiday. Read more to make comments.
Fifteen-year-old Jem doesn’t like people very much. When she looks people in the face, Jem sees their numbers—the dates when “their numbers will be up.” With death an unavoidable presence in her life, is it any wonder Jem prefers the isolation of a surly demeanor?
Jem’s world begins to change when she reluctantly forms a friendship with a boy from her school, but after they witness a terrorist attack, they go on the run.
For older teens and for adults, this debut novel provides a complex and intelligent story that is sure to captivate.

...Teens show their drawing talents
I have the pleasure of working in The Edge once a month. When we were first asked to volunteer for a shift in the teen activity room we were also asked to not go in empty handed... give them something to do... get involved with the teens. I've had this simple art idea brewing in the back of my mind for a while. Then in one meeting with managers and supervisors I heard that the kids are always asking for paper so they can draw. I knew it was time to get my little activity put together for my next stint in The Edge. Click on to see the final products.
