Making Mini Movie Masterpieces: Books with Byte

Teens! Learn how to make mini movies and upload them to a social networking site. Each mini movie will revolve around Books with Byte, young adult books and reading. You need to attend all three sessions to complete your movie!  Registration is limited to 16. For information call 785-580-4565

Making Mini Movie Masterpieces Workshops are a collaboration with Washburn University Department of Educational Technology (Dr. David Pownell) Washburn University Curriculum Resource Center (Ms Heather Smith-Collins, MLS) and Topeka & Shawnee Co. Public Library

Workshop 1: Overview of the three workshops; Staying within copyright regulations; Creative Commons; Brainstorming and viewing examples; Planning, storyboarding and props; Camera 101 shooting effective footage.   Sat | Sept 13 | 1:00-4:00 PM

Workshop 2: Overview of Movie Maker editing software; Filming/shooting; Saving footage. Sat | Sept 20 | 1:00–4:00 PMWorkshop 3: Review of Movie Maker software; Editing the footage; Saving the movie; Uploading the movie. (YouTube & SchoolTube require teens to be 13) Sat | Oct 11| 1:00–4:00 PM

Dr. David Pownell  is an assistant professor of educational technology at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. He has received a Bachelor 
of Science in Computer Science Education from McPherson College, a Master’s of Science in Educational Computing, Design, and Telecommunications from Kansas State University, and a doctorate in Educational Administration from Kansas State University. Dr. Pownell has worked as an Educational Technology Specialist for 
Kansas State University and taught computer studies at Garden Plain Jr/Sr High School in Garden Plain, Kansas. He was also the computer coordinator at Garden Plain and served as an outreach computer teacher for Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Heather Smith-Collins, M.L.S., is the Public Services- Curriculum Resources Center Librarian at Washburn University.  In addition to her responsibilities directing the CRC, she is also the Library Liaison for the Department of Education, the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Exercise Science and also for the School of Nursing. Before moving to the CRC, she worked in Public Services at Mabee Library
and co-directed the Newman Division of Nursing Library at Emporia State University. She was elected to sit on the executive council of the College and University Library Section of the Kansas Library Association and has been appointed to several KLA committees. She also volunteers with Teens Against Smoking in Kansas and a Kansas-based, non-profit research group.
