This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen
Men have always let Remy down. It started with her wandering musician father, who wrote a hit song for her, but never actually saw her before he died. Then a string of stepfathers that bumped in and out of her life when her mother’s four marriages failed. Love seems like a cruel illusion to Remy, and she decided a long time ago that she would not let herself be broken by it.
She becomes a serial dater, moving from cute boy to cute boy with no strings attached and keeps her heart safe and only for herself. Then she meets Dexter. He’s klutzy, hyper, and impulsive- everything that she hates in a guy. But for some reason, she can’t follow her own rules and get rid of him like the others.
I really enjoyed this book, mostly because of the outstanding characters. Remy is a tough girl who is fiercely protective of the people that she loves and is honestly trying to do what’s best. She makes mistakes, but she’s never annoying or unbelievable like some main characters tend to be. I was really rooting for her and laughing out loud at her sarcasm and dead pan observations.
This Lullaby also has some amazing side characters, from Remy’s eccentric mom to the hilarious boys of the yellow house. Every aspect of Remy’s life is bursting with quirky detail and I felt like I was experiencing it right along with her. Oh, and you’ll understand the title of this blog post after you read the book!
