Entertainment news this month about Rhianna and Chris Brown has brought national attention to the issue of dating abuse, especially since the music stars involved are popular with teenagers. Much of the media attention about domestic violence refers the readers back to some excellent websites on this topic.
http://www.loveisrespect.org/ is the website of the National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline. When you click on the website, the frightening reality of abusive relationships flashes in your face in the form of a “Safety Alert” that reminds the viewer that computer use can be monitored and to use a safe computer to view this site. Past that message though, the site offers “Are You Being Abused?” and “Support for a Friend.” The site also offers a toll free telephone number and live chat for teens who want to talk to someone about their situation. The site is sponsored by Liz Claiborne, Inc., which also offers http://loveisnotabuse.com/
Understanding Teen Dating Abuse Fact Sheet is published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Injury Prevention and Control and offers information, advice, and more resources.
