Light Years Ahead of Some of the Technology

image

Written by the Set Director

Technology has invaded everything in our lives.  It is everywhere and it is nearly impossible to get away from it.  Everything, including the kitchen sink, is affected by it.  To tell you the truth, I feel both ways about these facts.  I’m glad we’ve progressed so quickly and efficiently.  I’m disappointed that, though we’ve advanced greatly, we’ve tried to go farther in some places and not far enough in others.
In the future, I can see how this could benefit me.  Knowledge of 3-D virtual animation might really help me.  Seeing as it is used in not only entertainment, but also in engineering and designing, the possibilities can be endless.  It can be used for academics and help with certain learning processes.
Teen Second Life is a pretty fascinating program.  Seemingly light-years ahead of some of the technology we have to put up with today, it expands your knowledge of prims, scripts, and grid systems, uses different communication technology, and is slightly addictive.  This 3-D virtual animation program gives us just a glimpse of the thousands of things we can do in our future.
On the other hand, advancing this far might not be such a good thing.  We are pouring our money, time, and devotion into things we don’t need or don’t need immediately.  Meanwhile in some country, hundreds of people are dying from a sickness that is curable if they only have the right technology.  The technology they need has been available to us for a few decades.  All the while we are sitting at home watching an animated movie that took 200 people, two years, and tens of millions of dollars to make.
So there is my say in the matter of technology.  I’m not saying that it is good or bad.  It is a very interesting thing with endless possibilities, though it may be wasted on useless things.  My knowledge of technology was definitely broadened through my involvement in Teen Second Life and this was possible because of this project.  I have learned to appreciate what I have, and have greater empathy for others less technologically advanced than I.
