Kiss Me, Kill Me by Lauren Henderson
Scarlett Wakefield just wanted to kiss her crush, Dan McAndrew. Unfortunately, this kiss resulted in Dan being carried away in a body bag.
This book really kept me guessing. The mystery of what really happened to Dan on the night of their killer kiss is intertwined with the story of Scarlett trying to adjust to a new school and deal with her label as the “kiss of death girl.” I really liked Scarlett as a character because she is tough and very confident about certain things, like her skills at gymnastics, but also vulnerable and insecure at times. It seems like a lot of girls in YA books are one or the other, but Scarlett is more complex and realistic.
The mystery itself is intriguing because it’s so personal for Scarlett, and most of her information gathering missions are very exciting because of her athletic ability and general sneakiness. Kiss Me, Kill Me is the first in a series and the ending is not resolved at all. If anything, it leaves the reader with even more questions. It ends pretty abruptly, so I’m dying to read the next one!
