Kansas Teen wins Scripps National Spelling Bee

image

Kansans should be proud of thirteen year old Kavya Shivashankar, who just became the newest Scripps National Spelling Bee champion.  She’s from Olathe and won more than $40,000 in cash and prizes.  Her winning word was “Laodicean,” which means lukewarm or indifferent in religion or politics.  You can see a full list of words that she spelled correctly here.  I’m very impressed, especially since I don’t even know what most of the words mean.  Yay Kavya!

I saw Kavya interviewed on CNN this morning.  Such a classy young person, and she would like to study to become a neurosurgeon.  She said her younger sister is interested in spelling, too.  How exciting!

Did you know that Peg McCarthy President of Topeka Board of Education was a winner in ... not sure of the year, I want to say 1979.
