Students at the Hope Street Academy submitted an application for a wind turbine to the Wind for Schools program which is financed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Hope Street was one of five schools in Kansas to be selected.
Before the wind turbine could be installed the city's governing body needed to vote on allowing small wind energy systems to operate for nonresidentail purposes. The vote was 10-0 to approve the ordinance. According to Principal Dale Noll the 45-foot turbine will have propellers12 feet in diameter that will generate $400-$500 worth of electricity per year.
