My Fair Godmother by Janette Rallison
Lots of girls wish that they could be princesses. What could be wrong with a life of lavish parties, fancy dresses, and Prince Charming’s undivided attention? For Savannah Delano, the real life fairy tale is a not so happily ever after. After her gorgeous boyfriend dumps her and immediately starts dating her older sister, Savannah makes a heartbroken wish for a prince of her own. Instead, she gets a flaky “fair” godmother named Chrissy, who hasn’t done well enough in Magic School to earn the “y” in her title. Chrissy sends Savannah back to the Middle Ages first as Cinderella, then as Snow White, and again to save Tristan, a cute boy from school that has unwittingly gotten tangled up in Savannah’s wishes.
I love books that retell traditional fairy tales and My Fair Godmother is completely hilarious and had me swooning over the love story. Savannah becomes Cinderella during the smelly, slave labor days before she encounters the prince, and it is fun to see the truth behind the sparkly Disney princess version. Rallison twists the traditional stories in really clever ways, like dwarves in Snow White are called Sleepy, Dopey, etc. because she’s too ditzy to remember their real names. This book reminded me of Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine and Beastly by Alex Flinn in the best possible way and I recommend it to anyone who wants a sweet story with lots of laughs.
