self portrait wallLauren Greenfield’s Girl Culture exhibit leaves us with incredilble attendance numbers (3,311 to be exact) and fond memories. It was amazing to see so much excitement and support surrounding Girl Culture. Lauren expressed to me how grateful and excited she was to exhibit her photographs inside a library. One advantage of housing this exhibit inside the Topeka and Shawnee Public Library, is the diversity of visitors that come through our doors already on a day-to-day basis. Lauren...

Want to read what people said about Lauren Greenfield's Girl Culture exhibit?

We truly appreciate it when our visitors take time to sign our guestbook. We learn a lot, from opinions about the show, where visitors are from and how far-reaching our efforts can be (we had a man from Turkey to see Lauren's work).

We also learn what people want to see. Guests make suggestions about artisits they like or encourage/discourage us from repeating an exhibit or artists again.

New customers receive a vast amount of printed information from us. I usually give gallery visitors a copy of ConnectNOW, our monthly (and soon to be bi-monthly magazine of events and resources), Library Policies and Procedures, information about joining the Friends of the Library, the Exhibit Schedule, the current exhibit...

Like the last remaining days of summer camp, opening weekend of Girl Culture for me felt supercharged with energy, accelerated bonding and email-exchange. And now that it's over, now that the crowds have gone home and our lives have returned to "normal", the day after just seems a bit anti-climactic.

Lauren Greenfield
She's shown her work in museums around the globe, but rarely a public library. Why photojournalist and creator of Girl Culture is so excited to be here at the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library and what she hopes people will take away from her exhibit.

We want to hear your voice.
Let's start a conversation.

It is virtually impossible to view Lauren Greenfield's subject matter without recognizing our own community in her photographs.

Evidence of media and pop culture influence on women and girls can be found everywhere, from the mall and coffeeshops to schools and locker rooms. Many of Greenfield's subjects could be our own daughters, wives, mothers, sisters, best friends, girlfriends. Her work can be difficult to look...
