Stories to Remember: Creating a Culture of Giving that Embraces the Library
From the Ladies Library Association in 1870 to the present day, philanthropy has helped to create the margin of excellence at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library.  This presentation traces that charitable tradition by means of compelling stories illustrating the significant impact of gifts-both large and small.  It also looks forward by highlighting a few current philanthropic opportunities that align with the library’s organizational priorities.

Bio:
James McHenry Jr. has been the library’s Director of Development-and Executive Secretary of The Library Foundation-since July 1997.  A Returned Peace Corps Volunteer serving in Turkey, Dr. McHenry’s earlier career includes service as the Kansas Commissioner of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services and as the Executive Director of the Kansas Child Abuse Prevention Council.  He is married to Linda J. McHenry, a Chartered Financial Consultant and a nationally ranked Masters Competitive Swimmer.  They are the parents of two grown sons, Andrew and Eric, and the grandparents of Evan Michael McHenry (6) and Sage Elizabeth McHenry (2).
