Exercise plays a key role in our overall health at any age. But as people grow older, individuals need to find an appropriate exercise program that fits their specific needs. To help get you started, I have listed a few resources to explore and talk over with your physicians.
Exercise: A Guide From the NIA and NASA- This website offers information on the benefits exercise and physical activity have for older adults, how to safely exercise, and how to stay motivated. This site is also a great guide to exercises that focus on the four major abilities that older adults should be working on: endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility.
NIH Exercise for Older Adults- This web resource created by the National Institutes of Health offers information to help older adults begin an exercise program.
The library also offers some exercise videos and DVDs available for checkout. You might want try one of these titles: Sit and Be Fit, Lilias! AM & PM Yoga Workouts for Seniors, Carol Argo’s The Anti Aging Method, and Tai Chi for Older Adults.
