A Day in the Life of Jeanette - Lena the Orangutan Loves Cereal

image
I saw a big bag of cereal at the grocery store the other day and I thought of Lena, because one day she was setting on the 2nd level of her pen with a big, black, rubber tub full of cereal she was eating with a paper cup.  So I decided to buy the cereal and bring it to the zoo the next time I went with my friend, Doris.  When we arrived, Lena was inside, and when we walked in she came running up the limb to see us.  She saw the bag of cereal and motioned for me to give it to her.  I told her that I couldn't, but that I would give it to her caretakers and they would feed it to her.  Lena got mad, looked at Doris, gave her a big, juicy kiss, and turned and looked really mean at me.  She was staring at me eye to eye, then lifted her chin and looked away in a definite snub.  She repeated this process of blowing kisses at Doris and giving me the evil eye about twelve times.  I kept telling her that I was sorry, but that I couldn't give it to her.  She didn't care; she was MAD at me!!  After we left, I found out from Chris, who is in charge of feeding her, that we aren't supposed to bring food into the zoo.  Also, even if we could, they would not be able to take the food from me and feed her right then.  The veterinarian would have to inspect it first.  So not only was it fun to watch Lena give Doris all those kisses she normally can't get and see me being snubbed over and over again, but I also learned a good lesson today.  She may not be able to talk, but she definitely gets her point across.  She has feelings just like us.

Lena sounds like quite a character!  She knows how to get her point across.  I will have to make a point to visit Lena the next time I go to the zoo.

I think we should send protest letters if the vet doesn’t ok the cereal!  Of course if it contains chocolate, maybe he knows best. I found out about bad decisions on cereal contents and dogs from a Today show story that Anne blogged for us.  I was giving my dog Bernie raisins & walnuts from cereal every morning—a complete NO-NO for dogs! Don’t worry, she’s ok, but mad just like Lena!

I visited Lena all the time when she was in Cleveland. (I’m a volunteer at the CMZ) She LOVED food even then!  Most people asked if she was pregnant, but she was just FAT. I’m so glad to hear she’s doing well and has made new friends!
