Welcome to the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library

My Account : How To Pay Late Fees

Library materials returned beyond the due date are subject to a late fee. (Effective October 1, 2009)

What are the Late Fees on various items?

  • The library charges 25 cents per day, per item on items that have a 21-day check-out period.
  • High-demand materials like Express DVDs, Bestseller Express books, DVD Dispenser items and specialty items, like book bags and magnifiers, are assessed a $1 per day per item late fee.
  • More information on daily late fees and maximum late fees per item is available at the fee schedule, which is also available in print at the library and bookmobiles.

 When are Late Fees Charged?

  • Late fees are assessed when an overdue item is returned or renewed.
  • If the overdue item is still checked out, the customer's account will not reflect the daily late fee.
  • After an item is six months overdue, late fees are waived and the customer is charged the replacement cost for the item.

When Will Late Fees Block My Account?

  • Accounts are blocked when they carry a $10 or greater late fee or any charge older than 60 days.
  • If late fees block your account, you will lose library privileges including checking out materials or using the Internet computers until the fee is paid.

Returning to Book Drops

  • Save time and gas—Return your books, DVDs, music CDs and other library materials to the book drops located throughout Shawnee County.
  • Materials returned to the library's book drops are back-dated to the last date that book drop was emptied. Most book drops are emptied every day.

 Lost Items

  • If you notice an item still listed on your account that you believe you have returned, please search again at home for the item to return. If you are sure you returned it, report the item to Library Staff at the Check Out Desk or Bookmobile or call 785-580-4424.
  • If you lose an item and  pay the replacement cost, but later find the item and wish to return it within six months from the checkout date, you will be refunded the replacement cost minus the maximum late fee for the item.

Where to Pay Late Fees

  • Pay late fees in person using cash, personal check, debit or credit card at the Check Out Desk. You may also pay using your library SAM account.
  • Pay late fees on the Bookmobile using cash or check.
  • Pay late fees by mailing a check to the library, Attn: Circulation.
  • The library is adding options in early 2010 for paying late fees online, at many service points in the library, and at a self service kiosk in the library.

For more information about late fees or your library account, ask Library Staff at the Check Out Desk or Bookmobile, call 785-580-4424 or use the online Ask a Librarian services.
