What’s In Your Top 5?

image

Every now and then I enjoy watching biopic films, especially if the movie is about a famous musical figure or band.  These films are generally loaded with fantastic music and many of them have won or been nominated for film awards.  Luckily, the library offers numerous films that highlight the lives of various composers, singers, and musicians for everyone's enjoyment.  Here's my all-time favorite top 5 list of biographical films that portray the lives of some of the most beloved musicians.  If you haven't seen one of these titles, check it out from the library today.  Don't forget to let me know what musical geniuses make your movie list!

1.  Immortal Beloved (Gary Oldman as Beethoven)

2.  Amadeus (Tom Hulce as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart)

3.  Ray (Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles)

4.  Coal Miner's Daughter (Sissy Spacek as Loretta Lynn)

5.  Walk the Line (Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash)

One of my favorites is The Glenn Miller Story with Jimmy Stewart and June Allyson.  Also love The Benny Goodman Story with Steve Allen and Donna Reed.  The swing music in these is incredible.

Amadeus is one of my favorite movies of all time, so that would have to be number one on my list.  I agree with you, Terry, about The Glenn Miller Story.  Another movie with great jazz music is Bird, which is about Charlie Parker.

Great choices. I agree with Nate that Bird is awesome. My top 5: The Great Rock and Roll Swindle (about the Sex Pistols), Velvet Goldmine (highly fictionialized, but great to watch), What’s Love Got to Do with It?, The Nomi Song, and 24 Hour Party People.

I forgot about What’s Love Got To Do With It?  That’s really good, too.

“What’s Love Got to Do With it” is incredible.  When I went to see it, the whole audience erupted when she finally fought back in the back of the limo.  Just thought of a great little movie in this genre with Bob Hope: “The Seven Little Foys.”

My fav. music biopics have to be Round Midnight- featuring Dexter Gordon in Paris- Dexter playing the part of the ex pat. Bud Powell, and Hurly-Burly, which follows the life of Gilbert and Sullivan in the period leading up to the writing The Mikado.
