This is not your typical police procedural, although a case is solved every week and the criminal is caught by the end of the hour. The method behind the madness is what makes this television show unique and enjoyable.

Shawn Spencer was brought up to follow in his father's footsteps as a first-rate detective. Trained from a young age to make detailed observations and deductions, Shawn could rival Sherlock Holmes if only he didn't like to have so much fun. Rather than get a legitimate job on the police force, Shawn pretends he has psychic powers and acts as a consultant to the Santa Barbara police department on cases they can't crack on their own.

With his best friend and business partner Gus, Shawn is constantly making witty jokes and pop culture references while helping solve the departments biggest cases. The wacky premise works because of Shawn's interactions with the strong supporting characters, particularly his grouchy retired father, the no-nonsense police chief and the two lead detectives on the force.
