Welcome to the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library
Born in the Cleveland suburb of Shaker Heights, Ohio in 1925, Newman served in the Navy during World War II. After honing his craft in live television and the New York stage, he made his film debut in 1954's The Silver Chalice, a failed costume epic.
Soon after, Paul Newman quickly rose to stardom in Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956), The Long, Hot Summer (1958), and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), also starring Elizabeth Taylor. Newman starred in some of the biggest hits of the 60's and 70's, The Hustler (1961), Hud (1963), Cool Hand Luke (1963), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Sting (1973) both with longtime friend Robert Redford, The Towering Inferno (1974), Slap Shot (1977), The Verdict (1981). He won his only Academy Award for The Color of Money(1986). Newman followed with acclaimed performances in Nobody's Fool (1994), Road to Perdition (2002) and as the voice of Doc Hudson in Cars (2006).
Paul Newman's legacy goes beyond his status as a Hollywood icon. He was married to actress Joanne Woodward since 1958. His Newman's Own line of food products supports his Hole in the Wall Camp for seriously ill children. On top of that he was an avid race car driver and even made Richard Nixon's Enemies List for his political activism.
Luckily, Paul Newman's film career is available for us to revisit time and again. His good deeds will continue to help those in need. Nonetheless, Paul Newman will be missed.
