Welcome to the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library
When the movie revealed Mr. Bennet's first name, I laughed out loud along with Amanda Price onscreen. My husband shot me a skeptical look.
“It’s funny.” I explained, then I clarified, “Well, it’s funny if you care.”
And that sums up my assessment of the BBC miniseries Lost in Austen. If you care about the book Pride and Prejudice, if you have read it, if you like it, and especially if you love it, reread it and watch the various movie versions, then this new DVD of a 4 part British miniseries is PERFECT for you.
The premise is that a Pride and Prejudice obsessed modern London twenty-something swaps places with Elizabeth Bennet through a mysterious door. This lovely and delightful celebration of Austen and especially of Mr. Darcy is filled with inside jokes for those of us who are as truly Austen-obsessed as the main character, with a knowing nod toward the modern world and a wink to the societal customs of both.
If you are not a huge Austen fan, ….well….then this movie probably won’t win you over. But don't fret—the library has plenty of resources to turn you into an Austenite—I recommend starting with the Keira Knightly Pride and Prejudice and if that hooks you, there are six novels, dozens of movies adaptations and many modern and historical take offs on the original six stories from Austen.
