Welcome to the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library

listen up: Bonnie “Prince” Billy

image

I read about Bonnie “Prince” Billy’s music in a profile of the man behind the music, Will Oldham, in a recent article in The New Yorker. The piece, “The Pretender: Will Oldham transfigures American music” by Kelefa Sanneh appeared in the January 5, 2009 issue.

I don’t know how to write a music review. I don’t listen widely enough to make comparisions to other artists. Let me say instead that I think this album will appeal to fans of modern folk music. Most of the songs feature poetic lyrics and simple singing in two voices, with accompaniment plucked out on the guitar.

I checked out the CD the letting go based primarily on the intriguing description of Will Oldham in this New Yorker article. I’ve listened to it several times already, and while none of the songs are of the catchy jingle-pop variety, I find myself putting the album back on to hear the melodies again and again.

The library has an amazingly diverse collection of music CDs. I am delighted and surprised each time I check something out. I enjoying exploring new music and I wish I took the time to do it more often.

Music CDs check out for 3 weeks. You may check out 10 CDs on your library card. The Classical and Musical CDs are shelved near the non-fiction DVDs. The Soundtracks, Popular music, Country, Gospel, Jazz, Rock, Folk and other music are shelved in bins near the New Books Area. Children’s Music is shelved in bins near the picture books in the Youth Services department.

What have you checked out and enjoyed recently from the library’s music collection?

Thanks for reviewing this amazing, amazing album, Lissa. I think the library will be ordering another great Bonnie Prince Billy CD, Lie Down in the Light. Both of these albums are wonderful. As a matter of fact, Mr. Billy will be playing at the Granada in Lawrence in April. Go see him!
