Brian—what a great decade what a great list of movies! I have 10 more that are also much beloved classics nowadays:
Nine to Five (1980)
On Golden Pond (1981)
Gandhi (1982)
Sophie’s Choice (1982)
Terms of Endearment (1983)
A Christmas Story (1983)
Amadeus (1984)
Out of Africa (1985)
The Princess Bride (1987)
Steel Magnolias (1989)
I can’t believe I left off The Princess Bride?!?
Your others are all classics. It was hard keeping it to 10.
Any one else have 80s favorites?
Brian
My only addition to the lists would be The Goonies and Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure!
I would have to include Blue Velvet and Manhunter.
Well, somehow no John Hughes movies have showed up on our lists. All I know is that I really liked all of the 80s movies he did that I have seen so far. Critics generally agree that he was at the height of his powers during the 80s. Here’s a comprehensive list I found in IMDB:
National Lampoon’s Class Reunion (1982)
Mr. Mom (1983)
National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983)
Nate and Hayes (1983)
Sixteen Candles (1984)
The Breakfast Club (1985)
National Lampoon’s European Vacation (1985)
Weird Science (1985)
Pretty in Pink (1986)
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)
Planes, Trains, & Automobiles (1987)
She’s Having a Baby (1988)
The Great Outdoors (1988)
Uncle Buck (1989)
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)
Oops, I forgot Lissa’s favorite! (See her blog with the same title):
Some Kind of Wonderful (1987)
My 3 older children were born in 76,78,and 80. Some of the ones I remember that they watched over and over were: Top Gun, Adventures in Babysitting, Stand By Me,Karate Kid, Dirty Dancing,The Goonies, and all the Indiana Jones movies.
All great movies!
Many John Hughes movies would have made my Top 50 List. He identified with teen issues like no other filmmaker.
Thanks for everyone’s comments!
