The pot of gold at the end of the rainbow is always a bit elusive, but these Irish treasures are as good as gold.  Check them out at the library!

Angela's Ashes 
A memoir of Frank McCourt's childhood in depression-era Ireland where his childhood was frequented by loss and cruelty, yet his unquenchable optimism stems from his own mother's strength and it takes him far beyond his meager beginnings.  Starring Emily Watson and Robert Carlyle. 

Finians Rainbow 
A leprechaun tries to retrieve a crock of gold from an old wanderer who has taken it to America.  Starring Fred Astair and Petula Clark. 

The Brothers McMullen 
This angst-filled tale of three Irish-American brothers explores men’s relationships with women as they each face different crisis points in their life.  Starring Jack Mulcahy, Edward Burns and Mike McGlone. 

The Boxer 
When Danny Flynn returns to his Belfast neighborhood after 14 years in prison, all he wants is to find peace, resume his career, and reclaim the love he once had.  The past has a way of standing in the way of the future and Danny must find a way to break free from his past.  Starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Emily Watson. 

Irish Rainbow Darby O’Gill & the little people 
An old storyteller falls into a well and meets a group of leprechauns.  The leprechauns give him three wishes to get his life together.  Starring Albert Sharpe and Janet Munro.  

Barry Lyndon 
The rise and fall of a young, roguish Irishman who is determined to make a life for himself as a wealthy nobleman.  Barry lies, dupes and seduces his way up the social ladder where he finds wealth and power, but ultimately his obsession destroys him.  Starring Ryan O’Neal and Marisa Berenson. 

Dancing at Lughnasa 
This film takes a deeply emotional look into the lives of five unmarried sisters in 1930s rural Ireland.  These close-knit sisters are able to sustain each other through the hardships of life until the entrance of two men threatens to disrupt it.  Starring Meryl Streep and Michael Gambon. 

The Boys & Girl from county Clare 
Two feuding brothers and their bands compete at a music festival in 1960s Ireland.  The problem?  John Joe and Jimmy haven’t seen each other in 20 years and they parted on bad terms.  Starring Colm Meaney and Bernard Hill. 

Millions 
Two young Irish brothers try to decide how to handle the bag full of money which has fallen from the heavens.  Damian believes the money is a gift from god and should be used to help the poor, his brother Anthony is more of a capitalist and knows the money could be put to better use. Through the children’s eyes, we learn more about goodness and charity.  Starring Alex Etel and Lewis McGibbon. 

The Secret of Roan Inish 
Ten year old Fiona is sent to live with her grandparents on the coast of Ireland and soon learns of the legend that an ancestor of hers married a Selkie – a seal who could turn into a beautiful woman.  Her baby brother had washed out to sea years before and some believe he did not die, but was now being raised by the seals.  Fiona sets out to find her missing brother on the abandoned Isle of Roan Inish.  Starring Jeni Courtney.
