Welcome to the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library
This summer the National Park Service is offering three “fee free weekends” which means you’ll get to save the entrance fee and spend it on other things like books and t-shirts. The last weekend is August 15-16. You may find a list of the “fee free weekend” parks on the NPS website.
To help you decide where to go, check the library’s numerous guidebooks and DVDs focusing on our National Parks. And don’t forget about National Parks magazine which is located in the Periodicals room. Previous issues of magazines are also available to look at in the library, just ask at the reference desk and we’ll retrieve them for you. These materials often highlight the lesser known park units, the incredible diversity of our natural resources, and serve as valuable trip planning tools that can help you create the best itinerary for your family.
The NPS websites also have updated info about campgrounds, backcountry permits, horseback riding and park history. Most of the major parks have a visitor center in a convenient location with personnel there ready to answer your questions. Spending some time there the first day is always a good idea, and if you enjoy ranger talks look for an up-to-date program schedule inside.
