Teach yourself successful breastfeeding

image

Even though I have 6 months of breastfeeding experience now, I still seem to have new questions as my baby is growing. I’ve read the La Leche League book, The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding from cover to cover. I checked out the book from the Dr. Sears parenting series, The breastfeeding book: everything you need to know about nursing your child from birth through weaning by Martha Sears. And I’ve paged through many of the other books in the library collection on the subject of breast feeding. Many of the books say similar things and cite similar sources like the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Our community also has wonderful local resources and support systems for breastfeeding families. Both Stormont Vail and St. Francis have Breastfeeding Clinics staffed by nurses, and I think the Topeka La Leche League meetings are both fun and educational.  Since every baby is different, I like to read and learn as much as I can about breastfeeding my baby.

I was happy to find a brand new book on the shelves last week: Teach Yourself Successful Breastfeeding. As I was reading it, I noticed that it didn’t sound quite like the other advice I have read. While nothing seemed shocking or dangerous, everything just seemed slightly…different. It wasn’t until I came across the words “pram” “wind” and “nappy” that I realized I was reading a British book!

With delight, I flipped through the book looking for other British-isms and using the Internet to figure out what they all meant. When I shared some of the more interesting ideas for “baby-led” weaning with my husband, we joked about how getting British advice made us feel European…but not too European. After all, English culture is very similar to our own, but a slightly different perspective can be nice, especially when looking for more ideas on a topic.
