As a new parent, everyone offers me advice. Have you had that experience? From coworkers and family to books and television commercials, the information coming at me can be overwhelming. I try to find a few sources that I generally trust, and I refer back to them frequently, especially when I get conflicting advice.
One source that I find myself citing frequently to explain my parenting choices is the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), but until today, I had only read their advice quoted in other articles and books and I had never actually visited their website.
WOW! What a wealth of information! Since I have an infant, I especially liked their Children’s Health Topics for Infancy but other development ages up to 21 years are available in their Parenting Corner. I also had some success searching for keywords like “television” or “media” or “breastfeeding” to find articles and policies of interest to my family.
Our library also has over a dozen books written or endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics on a variety of parenting topics and available for checkout.
What are your favorite sources of parenting information?

I have been calling my baby’s doctor every week, she seems to be pretty trustworthy ![]()
I also found myself getting really frustrated with the “What to Expect…” books.
My preferred way of getting information is to talk to lots of experienced parents, do some internet searching, and then acting on whatever instinctively makes sense.
Carrie - I know what you mean about the “What to Expect” series—I liked them while I was pregnant, but I seem to want something different now that the baby is here. I have also met some great parents at the local La Leche League meetings. Usually by the time my spouse and I both read a little and talk about a situation, we have come up with a decision that makes sense for our family. So much of the advice I receive from people doesn’t really seem to apply to my baby, so I’m glad I have the library books, internet and other parents to rely on too!
