Although frustrating, it's common practice for museums and galleries to close between exhibits.
For one to three weeks, depending on the intensity of work, the Sabatini Gallery shuts down to the public to pack and ship artwork, patch and paint walls, temporarily accession, unpack and install new artwork, print and mat labels, posters, handouts, light each piece individually and modify the space to define the next show. The gallery becomes a whirlwind of hardware, spackle, paint splatters and museum wax—not the best time to entertain guests!
So we've put our exhibits online. Our goal is to create a viewing experience that comes as close to being here as possible. That means exhibit text, biographical and object information, artist and curator statements will accompany the images just as they do in our physical space. It is especially convenient for researchers and paper-writers because students can copy-paste text into their papers and use images for reference. Images are often uploaded at the highest resolution, making surface texture pop with detail. Sidenote: they also make excellent wallpaper on your computer.
Current exhibits are added immediately, while exhibit archives are added gradually. Other benefits to viewing us online:
