Welcome to the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library
Former Library Foundation Board Chair, Rick Friedstrom, just brought us our copy of the 2009 Aaron Douglas Art Fair poster, and I noticed it features the work of local artist, Stephanie Muñoz-O’Neil.
Our next exhibit, Recent Acquisitions, focuses on new art added to the Library’s permanent collection over the past four years. Gallery staff and volunteers selected favorite pieces, and one of them—Library on Blue—is by Stephanie Muñoz-O’Neil! Muñoz-O’Neil created this while the Library was under construction, and added her notes to the back of the frame. It reminds me of a blueprint, except for the long hook and cable descending from above, which adds more to the narrative: work is underway and this is a construction site, not just a preliminary architectural drawing (see image below).
Recent Acquisitions runs September 4 (First Friday opening) through October 16, so stop in and see Stephanie’s piece (and all the other cool new stuff we own).
The Aaron Douglas Art Fair is September 26 from 11–5 PM at the Art Park (at the Aaron Douglas Mural behind Dillon’s on Huntoon between Lane Street and Washburn Avenue).
Attention Artists: There is still time to enter your work into the Aaron Douglas Art Fair. Deadline is August 28! Enter online here. For more information contact Betty Wright at 785-234-8872.
