Combining both synthetic and natural elements (pine needles from Gage Park, gourds), local basket-maker, Teresa Johnston writes, “Basketry is in everyone’s history. My baskets are influenced primarily by works from Africans and the native Americans. My baskets are just art—there are no spiritual or religious meanings behind the pieces I make and should be considered multi-cultural.
Baskets throughout history were made first for utilitarian reasons, cooking, and gathering or storing. Later, baskets were made for ceremonial reasons or toys. Finally, baskets were made for trade. Different tribes and people of the world used different materials, weaving techniques, basket shapes and characteristic patterns. Settlers in America would make baskets of lashed straw for raising bread. Basketry items are considered to be highly collectible and can be found in museums around the world.”
All written information on display with Johnston’s work is available here—click to download PDF.
