Your 2009 Topeka First Friday map is now available. Simply click the image of the map seen below and print from any computer.
The maps are both color and number coded, so it isn't essential you print them in color. However, color makes it easier to see Topeka's growing clusters of art hotspots at a glance.
If yours is a new venue and you'd like to be added, or is a current venue and would like your contact information changed, email me (Heather) at hkearns@tscpl.org. Also, feel free to print and distribute these at any location. You do not need permission—print away!
First Fridays occurs on the first Friday of each month and allows Topeka's visual arts community a chance to host exhibit openings simultaneously. Several venues offer snacks and drinks, and the atmosphere is lively. Whether you're an artist or patron, everyone is welcome. Mingling and networking is encouraged! First Fridays at the Alice C Sabatini Gallery is free, casual and open to the public.
All ages welcome and ENCOURAGED!

Is this a walking tour, do you drive, are there shuttles? Seems like a ways to walk from the map.
Thanks.
Are you supposed to go to the galleries in order?
I’ve attended First Fridays for several years. I never get to all the locations but try to see a new gallery every time I go. See them in any order. Some are within walking distance of each other. Sorry, no shuttles. In my opinion, First Fridays are one of the best *free* activities in Topeka. See great art, talk to people and meet an artist, eat, drink, and have a great time!
Jeff, yes, no shuttles. The Topeka Trolly was part of the initial program but funding ran out. The Westboro area has several stops in one place, which is really handy, and an excellent argument for centralized arts community in Topeka ... maybe in the next 100 years…
Lena, no you don’t have to go in order. The numbers were added because we’ve had several color-blind patrons express difficulty using the color feature.
Where you go on First Fridays depends on what you’re in the mood for: buying, socializing, formal, casual, academic, etc. If you really crave lots of people, Warehouse 414 and Westboro are hotspots, as are the Sabatini and the Mulvane. If you want to buy art, visit the commercial galleries in the Downtown area, Westboro, Brookwood, Fairlawn, Fleming and Colorfields. For a more museum-academic experience, try the museums and non-profit. Both the Mulvane and the Sabatini offer educational elements and enriching projects, reading lists, further adventure.
And Becky, agreed. Skipping around to different places keeps it fresh, and it’s definitely one of the best free things to do on a Friday night in Topeka.
