Goodbye postcards, hello “e-xhibit” announcements

image

The Sabatini Art Gallery will switch to emailing our exhibit announcements on January 1, 2011.

I personally love art exhibit postcard announcements. In college I used to cruise the bulletin board on the 3rd floor of KU’s Art and Design building for out of date postcards that I could take back to the dorm and plaster all over my wall. But we’re in a recession and it’s time to look seriously at what we can live without. Our current mailing list is approaching 2,500 addresses, and the cost to professionally print and mail postcards is significant and they aren’t exactly environmentally friendly.

The labor involved is worth mentioning, too. Printing labels, adhering them to the cards and sorting them into individual zip code chunks (required by the US Post Office) can take upwards of 8 hours to complete. In a database as large as ours, duplicate and non-existent addresses can get overlooked, which means returned mail, wasted time and wasted money. And ultimately, our planet will benefit from green-conscious changes.

We’re building our database now. You may leave us your name and email address in our guestbook located near the Gallery exit, or use the simple contact form on our webpage. Please include your full name along with your email.

So mark your calendars: come New Year’s Day ‘11, it’s all e-mail from there. Please sign up ... we’d hate to lose touch with you.

Why not make the switch sooner? Just put this same information on your next few mailing and let people know they should sign up for the electronic if they want any more info from the Gallery? For all of the expense listed here, it just seems like a long time to continue spending that $$.

The notice has and will continue to be included on the back of our postcards. The alert has also been added to the top of our guestbook pages in the gallery. 18 months is a long time to transition, however, this was the date determined by the Special Collections and Gallery managers. A lot of people rely explicitly on our postcard mailings and I imagine, like our ConnectNOW transition, discovering and adopting the switch to electronica will be extremely gradual. We want to give people ample time to learn of the changes. But, yeah, 18 months… ???
