Convergence explores the recent efforts of three distinct Kansas artists—Louis Copt, Daniel Coburn and Jim Brothers—whose work embodies much of what we love about our home state: the great expanse of native landscape, our rich history and ongoing narrative.
But it is also about friendship. As the relationship between these artists grows, so does their work. Copt and Coburn, known primarily for painting and photographing the vastness of natural Kansas space and the passage of time, are experimenting with figurative work and collage. Brothers, whose life-size sculptures tell the story of Kansas and its role in the evolution of our nation has developed a taste for assemblage.
For the first time, Copt, Coburn and Brothers converge as friends and visual storytellers and showcase the new, exciting directions their work is taking. This exhibit runs from July 2 through September 3, 2010.

FROM THE ARTISTS (click on names to visit artists' websites):
My work has been influenced by a number of things, least of which is the environment in which I grew up and currently live. Rural Kansas and the Flint Hills have been the major focus of my work since the mid 80's. Travel has also had a great influence on my painting…I enjoy the challenge of interpreting different surroundings through the lens of past experience. –Louis Copt
My sculpture is inspired by my fascination with people. I seek to document their history, their experiences, and their accomplishments—to tell their stories. –Jim Brothers
As my work progressed I began to focus on the impact of a human presence. I began to study areas that were once occupied and then abandoned. I began to study areas that only saw an occasional visitor and were protected from human influence. –Daniel Coburn

Thanks, Lisa. Watch for a video element in here about midway through. Per Bill’s suggestion, I’m going to do one for each show.
A video walk-through is a terrific idea for this unique exhibit. And it is certainly a fantastic visual experience to appreciate the amazing array of immense talent of these wonderful artists. Gallery staff have done their usual best to showcase the art and put together a pleasant experience for visitors. Kudos to them and thanks also for their commitment to teach all of us how to appreciate art and understand what it means in our lives.
WHOA! Thanks, Kathy!
