In 2004, Fort Scott Community College established the Gordon Parks Celebration of Culture and Diversity, an annual event held each October celebrating the achievements and contributions of the internationally-known photographer, filmmaker, writer and musician. Parks wrote about his hometown of Fort Scott, KS in his autobiographical novel and subsequent film, The Learning Tree.
The mission of the Gordon Parks Celebration is to provide experiences that promote artistic creativity, cultural awareness and the role of diversity in our lives. The Celebration includes presentations of lectures, exhibitions, panel discussions, competitions and live performances. It culminates with the awarding of the “Gordon Parks Choice of Weapons Award”.
