Message: Author Spotlight: Christopher Moore How can a single author be compared to Kurt Vonnegut, Douglas Adams, Jonathan Swift, Tom Robbins and Dave Barry? Like many people, I discovered Christopher Moore a few years back with his bestseller Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal, in which Moore recounts the missing early years of Jesus life in a divinely hilarious, irreverent and inspiring novel. Lamb instantly became one of my favorite novels to re-read and recommend. New for 2006: A Dirty Job What happens when Christopher Moore takes on the Underworld? Charlie Asher – a single father, secondhand store owner and recently recruited Death Merchant - is about to find out. Charlie is also a Beta Male, the careful, sensitive guy who goes through life avoiding conflict. After his wife dies, strange shadows appear, voices whisper from the sewers, and people start dropping dead around him. And then things get really weird. Death may be A Dirty Job, but this is a wonderfully bizarre and absurdist exploration of the possibilities of the human soul. Additional Books: In The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror, the most wonderful time of the year has come to Pine Cove, California. Fluke: Or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings features the life of a marine biologist which takes a turn for the weird in this fantastic scientific conspiracy adventure. In The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove a blues bar attracts a colossal sea beast and a crime wave. Island of the Sequined Love Nun introduces a bumbling pilot flying shady secret missions for a remote Micronesian island. In Bloodsucking Fiends: a Love Story, a young man falls in love with a beautiful red-head, who also happens to be a vampire. Coyote Blue tells the story of a trickster Coyote who creates chaos in an insurance salesman’s life to help him rediscover Indian mysticism. In Practical Demonkeeping, all hell breaks loose when a 100-year old scholar and a demon arrive in Pine Cove. Why Christopher Moore’s novels are wonderful: First off, the world needs more laughter. Author Carl Hiaasen has described Moore as “A very sick man, in the very best sense of the world.” Moore’s books will definitely make you laugh out loud. To sample his dark humor, just look at his blog. While you are waiting for his next novel to be released, Moore also offers his own very funny book recommendations. http://www.tscpl.org/books/comments/author_spotlight_christopher_moore/
