Welcome to the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library
As part of our Adult Summer Reading Program our participants shared about the books they would recommend to other patrons. Maybe your next great read will be from one of their suggestions!
MAUREEN recommends Stolen Lives by Malika Oufkia
My favorite thing about this book is…that it is a true story about a woman and children who were imprisoned for years and suffered horribly at the hands of their captors. I’d recommend this to other readers who like…reading about other cultures. This was an exciting story about a family imprisoned in a desert jail for over twenty years. This true story tells the story of human misery and hope.
ROBIN recommends Under Pressure by Carl Honore
My favorite thing about this book is...it’s so relevant to today’s culture of academic hothousing, helicopter parenting, and fast-paced living. I’d recommend this to other readers who like…reading about education, children, today’s society, etc.
ELIZABETH JO recommends St. Elmo, Or Saved at Last by Augusta Jane Evans
My favorite thing about this book is…the author’s ability to create her two main characters (St. Elmo and Edna) into seemingly real and relatable individuals to the reader. What they feel and how they react to each other and various situations is completely felat and understood by the reader. I’d recommend this to other readers who like…an enduring love story. Not for those wanting just a light read as the style is heavy and deep. However those who persevere are rewarded with and unforgettable story and guaranteed love for St. Elmo and Edna.
ANONYMOUS recommends A Different Kind of Blues by Gwynne Forster
My favorite thing about this book is…it has things I can relate to. I’d recommend this to other readers who like…Urban fiction.
The Library’s 2009 Adult Summer Reading Program is over, but be sure to check back with us next year for more summer reading excitement!
