Welcome to the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library
On a farm in Ohio, teenager John Rayburn is about to meet his double, John Rayburn. The two look alike and share the same memories, but not everything is a perfect match because John Rayburn the farm boy lives in universe 7533, and the other John Rayburn, also called John Prime, is from the universe 7433.
John Prime has a device that allows travel between the universes, but his motive isn’t about science or exploration. He has another agenda and that is to make money off of ideas from other universes. In Universe 7533 Rubik’s Cube hasn’t been invented and John Prime can just image the millions of dollars he could make off of the toy. He just has one problem- John Rayburn the farm boy.
The device that allows travel between the universes is broken and only allows the traveler to go in one direction so the traveler would not be able to return to a previous universe. John Prime offers John Rayburn a chance to use the device, and now John the farm boy must find a universe he can survive in and fix the device, but he’s about to discover that there are other travelers with even more dangerous plans. In The Walls of the Universe by Paul Melko there are multiple universes and John Rayburns too. This is a science fiction story that moves beyond science as John must define himself within all those possibilities.
