I recently read Levi's Will by W. Dale Cramer
My Thoughts: This is a book to savor and become immersed in as it describes Amish life with all of it's weaknesses exposed. The story of one man’s unusual life path gives the reader a look at how God can help people reconcile and forgive—even in the most difficult of circumstances.
Book Description: Levi’s Will follows the life of Will McCruder--also known as Will Mullet. Will changes his name after running away from his home among the Old Order Amish. He got into trouble with a girl and he doesn't want to face his father's wrath or the discipline of the Amish community. As he slips away, Tobe one of his many brothers, joins him. Will and Tobe know how to work hard and this enables them survive in the world, but eventually Will joins the Army and leaves Tobe behind. He also meets his future wife Helen, and the book follows his life as he eventually has to deal with his past and all the lies he has told.
The story switches back and forth between Will and his son Riley going to his father's Amish funeral, and Will's memories of the past. It unfolds slowly and through Will's eyes we see the world of the Amish and the life of a man struggling to make it in the world. The author's descriptions are vivid and it really feels like as a reader you are stepping into the world of the Old Order Amish. The author has pulled from his own family experiences and crafted a poignant tale of families ripping apart and coming back together again.
