The Pretend Wife by Bridget Asher
How far would you go for an old college flame? That is what happily married Gwen Merchant must decide.
An old college flame, Elliot Hull, told his dying mother that had had gotten married. That is the one thing that she most wanted before she died. Now, she wants to meet his wife before she dies. So, he told a “little white lie”. Now, the question is: where does he get a wife?
While Gwen and her husband Peter are in an ice cream shop, in walks Elliot. Elliot invites himself to a party that Gwen and Peter are going to. At the end of the party, it is only Gwen, Peter and Elliot who are still there with the hostess, Helen. By this time they have all had a little too much to drink. It is suggested that Gwen be Elliot’s “pretend” wife for a weekend. She would meet his mother and then his mother could die happy.
Sounds simple, right? Wrong! Gwen starts questioning her life with Peter. Is she really happy? Is it what she wants out of life? Nothing is simple as this book has twists and turns you wouldn’t expect.
Read this book and you can laugh and cry with Gwen like I did. Maybe it will even make you question your own life.
