The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde
If you could step into the pages of any book, where would you go? If the continued existence of classic works of literature were at stake, what would you risk to save them? In this imaginative fantasy, Jasper Fforde asks these very questions of his feisty female protagonist, Thursday Next.
Fighting for justice and literary integrity, Thursday Next works as a SpecOp-27 Literary Detective in 1985 Britain, during a time when literary theft, forgery of first editions, and other crimes against the humanities are taken quite seriously by the Special Operatives. Cloning and time travel are so common they are passé, yet when Thursday’s eccentric uncle invents a way to travel inside of books, the law is unable to control the consequences. Thursday gets involved in the crime scene when the third-most-wanted criminal in the world, Acheron Hades, steals the technology and begins wreaking havoc by killing off minor characters in literature, beginning with a work by Charles Dickens and then heading to the Bronte’s Haworth House. As Thursday battles the evil Acheron Hades, she also must deal with the Goliath Corporation, whose creepy executives seem to be overly involved in the investigation.
An exciting story that combines elements of detective and fantasy fiction, this novel is highly recommended for lovers of British literature. A familiarity with the storyline and characters of Jane Eyre is helpful, but not necessary to enjoy the developing adventure.
