The complicated story of dogs and man

image

Love them or hate them, dogs have been a part of human society for thousands of years although the way humans interact with them has changed. For example, people originally used dogs for work, not as cherished companions. Because of this relationship, dogs have permeated all forms of expressions including stories, books, paintings and sculptures. First Friend: A History of Dogs and Humans by Katherine M. Rogers looks at this relationship through time and is a fascinating and detailed account of these ever changing roles. This examination goes further than just discussing the history of various breeds, it also looks at both the negative and positive views of dogs and the way humans interact with them.
