Stick This Book in Your Ear: Home by Julie Andrews

I love to have a great audiobook playing in my car as I drive to and fro, one that will keep my attention over the traffic noise and mundane duties of driving.  Occasionally I find a book that not only does just that, but transports me to another place and time.  Here is one of those audio gems.

Home: A Memoir of my Early Years by Julie Andrews, narrated by the author.
Author narrated books are not always a good idea, but some books are enhanced by hearing them in the authors own voice, and that is definitely the case with this memoir. I greatly enjoyed hearing Julie Andrew's elegant voice narrating the events of her life, from her early childhood up until the birth of her first child. The book got off to a slow start, so much so that I wondered if I would stick with it, but once Julie's career started I was glad I kept with it as I was transported into the world of Broadway during the time of My Fair Lady and Camelot, and meeting people like Alan Lerner and  and Richard Burton.   I also enjoyed hearing about Julie's personal life, her rocky family background, her early romances, and her adventures with people like the eccentric author T.H. White. The snatches of music in between each chapter and disc also lend the perfect tone to this book, as do small excerpts of Julie's musical performances. Definitely pop this one into this your CD player for an entrancing listening experience--but be warned, the book ends abruptly and you will be left wondering when Ms. Andrews plans to come out with the next volume.
Note: If you think you will be missing out because you won't be able to see the pictures if you listen to the book rather than read it, the audio version includes an "enhanced CD" that can be used on a computer to see the pictures from the print version of the book.   So you truly can have everything!

I don’t like audio books that well, but you sure sold me on this book.  I’ll just read it instead and look at the pictures.  I wonder what she said about her costar in the movie “Victor, Victoria”, the great Broadway star Robert Preston.

Unfortunately you will have to wait for part II (or even part III?), as this volume ends just as she is going out to California to star in Mary Poppins.
