There’s a village called Three Pines just south of Montreal that had unlocked doors in picturesque homes, but that was before the murder. Jane Neal was respected and liked so it was hard for the villagers to believe that anyone would murder her. Most assumed it was a hunting accident since she was found in the woods, but Chief Inspector Armand Gamache suspects that this is a murder. Jane’s friend artist Clara Morrow who is battling her sadness keeps thinking about the case. Even in a small town there are secrets, and in Still Life by Louise Penny, it is clear the murderer might just be someone Clara knows from the village and that is too close for her safety. Two more books have been written about the investigations of Armand and Clara. In the second one, A Fatal Grace, Armand is called to the village to investigate the electrocution of a disliked even hated woman. The next book is The Cruelest Month, and it is the beginning of spring, but the life of a newcomer to Three Pines is cut short by murder. The Three Pines Mystery Series is full of the flavors of a small village in Canada, but the investigations are focused on finding the hidden truths behind the façade that hide both the ugliness and beauty of life.
