If you enjoyed reading Barbara Ehrenreich’s
“Nickels and Dimes”, the story of a single woman
struggling to survive on a minimun wage and Jame’s Frey’s “A Million Little
Pieces”, a drug addict’s memoir, you might enjoy “Something Like Beautiful” by asha bandele.
This memoir deals with being Black, being woman,
wife and mother. Asha has
incredible self-knowledge,
knowledge that not only opens your eyes about 2008 Black issues and exper- iences, but mirrors aspects of the human experience that could be life changing.
Asha has an original style
of writing that delights the poet in us. Indivi- dual ideas become kaleid- ascopes reminising an ex-
perience not unlike surfing the net. Repetition
of sentences, phrases and words reflect her inner
wonderings and catch your attention.
This qoute from Chapter Twelve, page 164, says it all.
“I want my wounds to be acknowledged I want them healed.
And I want myself back.
That’s what we all have to
say, at some point what we have to demand.
Give me back.
Give me back.
