Paying the Price
It’s a secret worth anyone’s life, and the Magisters will stop at nothing to keep it. Magic has a price. Each time witches use their power, a little more time is taken from their life, but the Magisters are different. They do not suffer from the use of their powers, and they seem never to age. Prince Andovan is dying and his father will stop at nothing to save him. Magisters are summoned from across the many lands, but the dreaded diagnosis for the Prince is the Wasting, a disease with no hope of survival. The Magisters fear that the true cause of the disease might be discovered which goes to the heart of their secret. Besides the risks of discovery, the Magisters may face yet another unknown. Up to this time only men were able to transform themselves into Magisters, but a young woman hardened by poverty and abuse has a gift of magic and the desire to transform herself into one of the immortal Magisters. In Feast of Souls by C.S. Friedman, magic is not free and power has the price of life. This is the first book of the Magister Trilogy, and it is an exciting start to this new series.
