Paul Newman: A Life by Shawn Levy
Comprehensive is the best word to describe this outstanding biography of movie icon Paul Newman. Even though biographer Shawn Levy never interviewed Paul Newman, the author read transcripts of numerous interviews Newman gave to other sources throughout his long, illustrious career. Here we have the man, warts and all, for a fascinating insight into one of the most intriguing movie actors of our generation. Not only was he noted for his acting accomplishments but also for his success as a race car driver, an entrepreneur, and a major philanthropist. His was a life well lived up until the very end.
Newman was born into a comfortable middle class family and grew up in Shaker Heights, Ohio. His father was a successful owner of a major sporting goods store. Newman chose the path less well-traveled and studied acting at all-male Kenyon College and later at Yale University and in New York City. He was trained as a method actor that helped him delve into his emotions. His road to fame was bumpy, and he encountered many difficulties along the way. Married young to sweetheart Jackie, he and she quickly created a family, so responsibilities to his wife and children were a primary concern to the fledgling actor. As he became more involved in the theatrical life, he and Jackie grew apart. Newman met the love of his life Joanne Woodward, a Southern belle, in theater circles and divorced Jackie to marry Joanne. Their marriage of fifty years survived a little-know affair that this book chronicles, and they worked hard to raise Paul's six children together. Even though he was away from home for extended periods of time, Newman was at heart a loving family man. The suicide of his only son Paul was one of the greatest tragedies of his life, and he did his best to keep his son's memory alive.
Reading this biography, written in exact chronological order, is an opportunity to see the personal and professional growth of Paul Newman over a period of time. He remained true to himself throughout his long career.
