Welcome to the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library
While I was putting up my LGBTQQ (LesBiGayTransQueerQuestioning) Book Display, I was inspired to share with you my very favorites of the genre. So here you go!
My Top 5 LGBTQQ Books (In no particular order):
Out of the Pocket by Bill Konigsburg. Out of the Pocket makes my Top 5 list because it tells the coming out story of Bobby Framingham, who is the star quarterback of his high school football team. The story takes told in a realistic and engaging way giving the reader an idea of what it is like to be a gay youth today.
Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinburg. Stone Butch Blues is a novel that will make you cry, I guarantee it. It tells the painful story of a butch lesbian woman in the 1960s, detailing what life was like for the gay community before the Stonewall Riots in 1969.
Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel. Alison Bechdel is well known for her long-running comic Dykes to Watch Out For, but Fun Home is my favorite of her work. It tells the story of her life growing up in the funeral home her family owned and details the complicated relationship she had with her father.
Valencia by Michelle Tea. This book is a wild ride! It tells of a young lesbian woman in the 1990s in San Francisco. Some of the events are funny and fun, other times heartbreaking but all told in a fast-paced engaging way.
I Am Not Myself These Days: A Memoir by Josh Kilmer-Purcell. Kilmer-Purcell tells of his life as both himself, Josh, who works in an advertising office and his other self, a 7 foot tall drag queen named Aqua in the 1990s in New York City. At the beginning his life is glamorous, all parties and parades, but things take a turn for the worse.
You will find these titles and many others on my display in the Media & New Books Area (right by the CDs), June 1 - June 8. Now I’d like to hear your Top 5!

Oooh - it’s hard to narrow it down. I think my top five of the moment are: Working Parts by Lucy Bledsoe, Latter Days by T. Fabris, Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan, Geography Club by Brent Hartinger and Pretty Things by Sarra Manning. I’ve reviewed most of those on the library’s website after I read them. I also really liked Fun Home though, it might be time for a re-read on that one! Great display Jessica!
Thanks for the display, Jessica. Very nice presentation and helpful book descriptions!
