Mystery writer Christine Andreae (Grizzly, Trail of Murder) shares her experiences as a new hospice patient-care volunteer in the teary and absorbing When Evening Comes. Andreae becomes particulary close to Bivie, a 39-year old mother dying of cancer, Amber, another young mother with a brain tumor, and Lucy, a widow, who reminds Andreae of her grandmother. Each woman has different needs and Andreae must find her own role in supporting the women and their families in their final months. After movingly recounting Bivie’s death, Andreae concludes that hospice volunteers can only do so much because “ultimately, the process of dying – liking the process of living – is a unique and solitary task for each of us.” The title comes from Jane Kenyon’s haunting nocturne “Let Evening Come”.
