On a hot July day, 31-year-old Tierney Temple-Fairchild, twenty weeks pregnant, and her husband Greg went to the hospital for a routine ultrasound and left devastated: their much longed for first baby not only had a serious heart defect but there was also a sixty percent chance that their child had Down syndrome. While they waited for the results of the amniocentesis – a screening test used to detect genetic abnormalities -- Tierney and Greg immersed themselves in literature about Down syndrome and asked doctors, counselors, and other parents about what they might be facing: Could the heart defect be fixed? How mentally retarded would the baby be? If the baby was severely retarded could they put the baby up for adoption?
